Learning from the Past? Ethics of Pandemic Preparedness

The speakers will discuss the critical importance of pandemic preparedness, response, and continued readiness. Some aspects of previous outbreaks involving hospitals and healthcare facilities, as well as the limited changes that have occurred in healthcare readiness will be presented. A review of the current U.S. response efforts to the challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak reveals the changes needed to be made.

Saskia (van Rijn) Popescu, Ph.D., MPH, MA, CIC, Senior Infection Preventionist at HonorHealth, ELBI Fellow of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Moderator:
Shuran Huang

Shuran Huang is an award-winning photojournalist based in Washington, D.C. She earned her master’s degree in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and her undergraduate degree in international journalism from Hong Kong Baptist University. Previously, Shuran’s work was featured on National Public Radio, The New Yorker, The Buffalo News, Visura, LG, and Netflix. Shuran won the grand prize in 2018 Photo District News’ Faces Portrait Photography Contest, was listed as a winner during the 2019 Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward competition, and was shortlisted for the 2019 Siena International Photo Awards.
