As we are currently facing the COVID – 19 pandemic, it is evident that we all need more factual information about how to prepare and possibly manage a disaster of this magnitude. At the Global Bioethics Initiative, we want to help address the information gaps and support others to be prepared for the peak of the Coronavirus infection. We are pleased to announce that we will be organizing a series of webinars to inform the public and decision-makers about disaster preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks and pandemics including the ethical aspects of those. We will engage a wide range of experts in various fields to inform these discussions including epidemiologists, bioethicists, philosophers, journalists, health care professionals, and policymakers.
The webinar discussions aim to provide a platform for a diverse set of stakeholders to undertake dialogue and to enable a better understanding of progress made and challenges faced. We hope that you will join one or more of these online forums and contribute to the conversation with your questions and comments.
In an upcoming webinar, “Learning From the Past? Globalization and Coronavirus Spread,” we will be featuring Dr. Saskia (van Rijn) Popescu Ph.D., MPH, MA, CIC, Senior Infection Preventionist at HonorHealth, ELBI Fellow of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. Their focus will be on healthcare response and pandemic preparedness. Ms. Isabelle Niu will moderate the webinar.
Dr. Popescu holds a doctorate in biodefense from George Mason University and is an infection prevention epidemiologist. Her research focuses on infection prevention as a health security measure and works to explain the poor utilization of infection prevention and control within the United States through political economy. She has a master’s in public health in infectious disease epidemiology, a Master of Arts in international security studies, and is certified in infection control.
Ms. Niu is a video journalist based in New York. She produces and hosts video explainers for Quartz’s highly successful series “Because China.” She also co-edits a bi-weekly newsletter that highlights members’ published works, share industry news and lead discussions about hot button topics regarding diversity, journalistic practices, ethics and more.
The webinar has been postponed to a later date. For more information, click the link below.
