Family believes son, 4, received fire victim’s heart

By Kayla Santos

A four year old boy in desperate need of a heart transplant was finally given one thanks to the incredible generosity of a grieving family. Although the details have not yet been confirmed due to restrictions of a privacy policy, it is believed that the Guerra family is to thank for a number of donated organs of a brother and sister who perished in a house fire a week ago. The donations from the brother and sister, Fuentes and Miranda, which included a heart, kidney, liver and pancreas each, have helped save 11 people’s lives.
Four year old Liam Sprague is believed to be one of the recipients of the heart donated by 6 year old Fuentes. The Sprague family has spent the last eight months living out of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in wait of a heart transplant for Liam.
In the nation there are approximately 121,000 patients on waiting lists for organ transplants and roughly 18 of those die every day, according to the IU Health Director of Transplant Nephrology, Dr. Tim Tabor.
