A nationwide representative survey claims that almost 60 percent of Bulgarians will not consent to donating their organs. This survey was conducted among 950 people in June 2013 and the data was analyzed on Tuesday by the head of the Executive Agency for Transplantation in Bulgaria, Dr. Mariana Simeonova.
More than 70% stated that they would consent to donating an organ to a family member. Only 25% of the participants stated that they would consent to organ donation to a stranger, whereas about 62% would have organ transplantation. 33% of the participants were uncertain of their answer. The date also showed that 85% of those who polled claimed to be Orthodox Christian, and 52% were uncertain if their religion allowed organ donation.
The data reveals an inadequately informed population in Bulgaria. Over 70% of the participants stated that they needed more information on organ donation and transplantation, and 54% polled that their information on transplantation came from television. The hope is that this data raises questions and awareness on the issue of organ donation and transplantation in Bulgaria.
