Crimes of 21st Century: Organ Trafficking, Global Health and Security
NEW YORK, Feb 14, 2013: Poverty, widespread violence, lack of educational opportunities and limited access to resources are marginalizing large segments of the population globally. Vulnerable people become easy prey to illicit trafficking, often leading to terrorist recruitment. The black market for organs and body parts is flourishing in India, China, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe in which the poor and desperate find their sole escape in selling their organs to the highest bidder. The World Health Organization estimates over 10,000 cases of illegal sales of organs in 2010, one organ trafficking incident per hour.
The expert panel assembled for this urgent discussion will present a precedent-shaking trial case of doctors for organ trafficking, including the widespread organ “trade” from executed prisoners and unwilling donors. Organ trafficking is a significant health, foreign policy and national security issue – already recognized as a key danger marker by the international community
